Respect is a huge word with many different meanings. Most of us know what disrespect feels like but can't seem to define respect so I found this article on Entrepreneur.com that I think helps: Here are 7 Qualities of People Who Are Highly Respected:

Be polite. Always be polite to everyone you meet during the day, from your family members to your co-workers, to the checkout person at the grocery store.
Act respectfully.
Listen well.
Be helpful.
Don't make excuses.
Let go of anger.
Be willing to change.
